In our Lenten journey we are companions with the Catechumens and Candidates who have been elected to participate in the Sacraments of Initiation this Easter. They made their next step at the Rite of Election at the beginning of Lent in diocese across the country. Each year we collect the figures for the Rite of Election as a snapshot. Like most statistics they only begin to make sense in comparison to previous years. From year to year the figures go up and down. This year some dioceses have significantly more than last year, some have less. One general trend continues which is the:
- growing proportion of Catechumens – i.e. those who are unbaptised seeking full Initiation.
One diocese has had significantly more Catechumens for a number of years. The other element is the
- growing number of children.
Though this may reflect that we have not sought these figures every year. This year we also asked dioceses to provide the number of parishes present as another indicator,
What the figures are not is a short term barometer or opinion poll on the Catholic Church. Because event X happens in 2016 this does not have an immediate effect on the following Rite of Election. If nothing else it suggests a rushed process. Big events can effect and affect people but at its heart this is about individuals responding to God’s call in their lives and finding a place to understand and deepen that response in a local community.
Father of love and power,
it is your will to establish everything in Christ
and to draw us into his all-embracing love.
Guide the elect of your Church:
strengthen them in their vocation,
build them into the kingdom of your Son,
and seal them with the Spirit of your promise.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
